Scribit.pro launches browser plug-in for accessible videos

The Video Accessibility Plugin,  a free to download browser extension makes it easy and safe for everyone to automate the play-out of subtitles and audio description as the preferred setting in your browser.

Scribit.pro has developed the Video Accessibility Plugin for people with a visual or hearing impairment. The plug-in offers a convenient alternative for manually adjusting the settings each time you wish to watch a video online. Do you need subtitles or audio description? This tool automatically activates these options for you when available. The free plug-in features one-click installation and is compatible with the most commonly used browsers and video players, including YouTube, Vimeo and JW Player.

Audio description and subtitles help people with a visual or hearing impairment to fully experience and enjoy videos. The audio description describes what is seen on screen when there is no dialog. This way, people who are blind or visually impaired are able to follow the whole story. Subtitles allow people who are deaf or hearing-impaired to read the words that are spoken in the video. The plug-in automatically searches for and activates audio description and subtitles.

Ideal for blind or visually impaired users

“A large majority of Internet users all over the world does not yet benefit from accessible videos,” says Eveline Ferwerda, initiator of Scribit.pro. “With the Video Accessibility Plugin, you will know for certain that you are always using the accessibility options of your preference when they are available. Especially for blind users, who use a screen reader and tab key to browse the page, a plug-in is extremely useful, ensuring that available accessibility options are never missed.”

The Video Accessibility Plugin is available worldwide. On the download page, the user is automatically directed to the browser and/or his or her preferred settings. No personal information is requested, and the plug-in only needs to be downloaded once. Also no cookies are set or stored when the plug-in is activated, so it is completely anonymous to use.

The plug-in was created with financial support from SIDN Fund and the Bartiméus Fund.
